What Is the MycoTOX Profile?

The MycoTOX Profile by Great Plains Laboratory (now Mosaic Diagnostics) is a urine test that screens for 11 different mycotoxins — toxic metabolites produced by indoor mould species. Mycotoxin exposure from water-damaged buildings is one of the most underdiagnosed causes of chronic illness, and this test provides the most comprehensive mycotoxin screening available.

Mycotoxins are small, lipophilic molecules that accumulate in body fat, disrupt immune function, impair mitochondrial energy production, and can cross the blood-brain barrier. Chronic low-level exposure often presents as a confusing cluster of symptoms that standard medical testing cannot explain.

What Does It Measure?

Aflatoxin M1
Produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. Associated with liver toxicity, immune suppression, and classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the WHO.

Ochratoxin A (OTA)
Produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species. One of the most commonly detected mycotoxins in water-damaged buildings. OTA is nephrotoxic, immunosuppressive, and neurotoxic.

Sterigmatocystin
Produced by Aspergillus versicolor — one of the most common indoor moulds. A precursor to aflatoxin with its own toxic effects on liver and immune function.

Roridin E, Verrucarin A, Satratoxin
Trichothecene mycotoxins produced by Stachybotrys chartarum (black mould). These are among the most acutely toxic mycotoxins and are strongly associated with severe fatigue, neurological symptoms, and immune dysfunction.

Gliotoxin
Produced by Aspergillus fumigatus. A potent immunosuppressant that impairs neutrophil and macrophage function — often elevated in patients with chronic sinusitis and recurrent infections.

Additional Mycotoxins
Including citrinin, mycophenolic acid, chaetoglobosin A, and enniatin B — covering the full spectrum of clinically relevant indoor mould toxins.

Who Should Consider This Test?

This test is particularly valuable for patients experiencing:

• Chronic fatigue that worsens in certain buildings or environments
• Brain fog, memory issues, or difficulty concentrating
• Recurrent sinus infections or chronic respiratory symptoms
• Unexplained headaches or migraines
• Muscle aches, joint pain, or fibromyalgia-like symptoms
• Anxiety, depression, or mood instability with no clear cause
• Known or suspected water damage or visible mould in home or workplace
• Symptoms that developed or worsened after moving to a new building
• Chronic illness that has not responded to standard treatment
